One-to-One Learn Your Camera

Helping Young Photographers Grow in Confidence and Creativity

Got a young photographer who loves taking pictures but wants to understand what their camera can really do?

Perhaps they’ve been given their first camera and don’t know where to begin. Maybe they’re already taking photographs but rely on Auto, get frustrated when the camera doesn’t capture what they imagined, or simply want to understand all those buttons, dials and settings. Is your teen doing photography at school and would like a little more confidence or extra tuition?

ONE-TO-ONE LEARN YOUR CAMERA PHOTOGRAPHY SESSIONS

Are for kids and teens and are designed around the individual young person, their camera, their interests and the photographs they want to create.

There are no exams, no competition and no pressure to take the “perfect” photograph.

Instead, they’ll have time to ask questions, experiment, make mistakes, try things out and discover what happens when they take control of their camera.

Because at Welshot Creative, photography is the vehicle, not the destination.

We want young photographers to leave understanding their camera better, but just as importantly, feeling more confident, curious and excited about what they can create next.

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

Five Hours of One-to-One Photography Tuition

This isn't a generic photography course.

The session is designed specifically around your young photographer and their camera.

Over five hours, we’ll work at their pace, helping them understand the controls and settings they need while putting everything into practice through practical photographic activities and creative challenges.

First Eifion will work side-by-side with your child, their camera and their workbook in the theory part of the session, then, they will go outside together and put it all into practice.

There’s plenty of opportunity to stop, ask questions, revisit something and experiment, throughout the whole five hours.

WHAT WILL THEY LEARN?

Every session is slightly different because every young photographer is different, but we’ll explore things such as:

  •  Understanding the important buttons, dials and settings on their camera.
  •  Moving away from Auto and discovering how taking control can change a photograph.
  •  The Exposure Triangle:  How aperture, shutter speed and ISO affect the images they create.
  •  Controlling exposure and understanding why photographs sometimes turn out too light or too dark.
  •  Using focus settings confidently.
  •  Choosing settings for different subjects and photographic situations.
  •  Composition, framing and learning to really look before pressing the shutter.
  •  Using their camera creatively rather than worrying about getting everything technically “perfect”.
  •  Developing the confidence to experiment, make mistakes and work things out for themselves.

Most importantly, we want them to discover that there isn't only one way to make a photograph.

Sometimes the most interesting images happen when you experiment.

MORE THAN LEARNING CAMERA SETTINGS

At Welshot Creative, we're not simply interested in teaching young people which buttons to press.

Photography encourages us to slow down, look closer, notice details, solve problems, make decisions and see familiar things differently.

A One-to-One session gives a young person the space to explore those skills without worrying about keeping up with a group or comparing their photographs with anybody else's.

They can ask as many questions as they like. They can spend longer on something that interests them. And if something doesn't work first time?

Brilliant. We can work out why, change something and try again.

That's part of being creative.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

A Welshot Creative One-to-One Learn Your Camera session could be perfect for a young person who:

  •  Has their first camera and doesn't know where to start.
  •  Has been using Auto and would like to discover what the other settings can do.
  •  Studying photography at school but would like some extra help, support and guidance
  •  Loves photography and wants to learn more.
  •  Enjoys being creative and experimenting.
  •  Learns better with individual support rather than in a group environment.
  •  Likes being able to ask questions and learn at their own pace.
  •  Wants to understand why a photograph looks the way it does.
  •  Would like to become more confident using their camera.
No previous photography knowledge is necessary.

They don't need to know the terminology, and they certainly don't need to arrive knowing what aperture, ISO or shutter speed (The Exposure Triangle) means.

That's what we're here for.

WHAT WILL THEY LEAVE WITH?

By the end of their One-to-One session, your young photographer will have a much better understanding of how their camera works and how to choose settings for the photographs they want to create.

But we'd like them to leave with something else too.

The confidence to experiment.

The curiosity to wonder, “What happens if I try this?”

And the excitement to pick up their camera and keep exploring long after their session has finished.

HOW IT WORKS

Where Does the One-to-One Take Place?

Sessions are based at the Welshot Creative Hub in Llandudno, North Wales.

Depending on the young photographer, what they would like to learn and the weather, we can combine indoor learning with practical photography outside so they can immediately put their new knowledge into practice.

How Long Is the Session?

Our full One-to-One Learn Your Camera session lasts five hours.

We usually run sessions Monday to Friday between 10:30am and 3:30pm, although we can sometimes offer alternative times or selected weekends with advance notice.  This may need to be done manually via a phone call.

What Should They Bring?

Please bring:

  • Their camera.
  • Any lenses they have.
  • Spare batteries and/or charger.
  • Memory cards.
  • A notebook and pen if they'd like to make their own notes.

Don't worry if they don't have lots of equipment.

This is about learning to get the most from the camera they already have.

Do Parents or Guardians Need to Stay?

We want both young people and their parents or guardians to feel completely comfortable with their Welshot Creative experience.  We need a parent, guardian or carer to stay throughout the whole session.

MEET EIFION:

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY TUTOR.

Eifion is one of the founders of Welshot and has been helping people become more confident photographers since 2009.

He's delivered hundreds of One-to-One photography tuition sessions, working with complete beginners through to experienced photographers, and has a knack for making complicated camera settings feel considerably less complicated.

But a Welshot Creative One-to-One isn't about sitting through five hours of technical instruction.

Eifion encourages young photographers to experiment, ask questions, try things for themselves and discover their own way of seeing the world.

Because knowing how a camera works is useful.
